1) We successfully converted a historic blanket factory built in 1896 to a state of the art import/export produce distribution company leading the way in food safety, sustainable agriculture and the promotion of Slow Foods, all of which are recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture, FDA,
the United States Department of Commerce and the EPA. |
2) Our success increases our commitment to “Going Green” where as we
show a 47% decrease in annual electricity usage through energy saving
lamps. That’s equal to 50 night games at Fenway or 120,000 homes per
year electric. |
3) Our recycling conservation and reusable tote programs which involve
corrugated materials, office paper and business forms and our transition to
a paperless warehouse saves 850,000 trees per year. Our commitment to
replace boxes with reusable totes in our newly established “Sid Wainer &
Son Going Green Center” will further establish our environment
commitment. |
4) Sid Wainer’s tote program will eliminate the production of 580,000 boxes.
Over 3 million gallons of water used in the production of boxes will be
spared annually. Given that nearly one third of landfill waste is corrugated
material, Sid Wainer is making a significant contribution to reducing solid
waste production as well as saving thousands of yards of landfill waste. |
5) Introduction of a complete energy efficient water filtration system which
replaces thousands of bottles of water and eliminates their disposal when
slated for a landfill. |
6) We bought hundreds of trailers of produce from local farms instead of
trucking it in from California. This equals approximately 1,100 gallons of fuel
per trip per truck. |
7) We have established rigid “Vehicle Idling Reduction Strategies”, by
reducing idling time of our truck fleet 36%, Sid Wainer & Son will reduce
fuel consumption by 2,760 gallons per month or 33,120 gallons per year. |
8) Brownfield: Several years ago, we successfully converted a brownfield
which had been unused and contaminated into what was ultimately the first
successful attempt at inner city agriculture in the northeast in the past
hundred years. This venture resulted in the creation of spectacular
greenhouses which are today yielding beautiful harvests locally year round. |
9) Sustainable agriculture: Over the last 12 months we have saved a
thousand acres of farmland which otherwise would have gone to
development. This effort can be replicated thousands of time throughout
the nation. |
