Over the ensuing months and years Sid Wainer is dedicated to a system of sustainable agriculture throughout the community so that from that moment forth the community will be recognized worldwide as the heart of New England agriculture. The word “sustain” means to keep in existence or maintain. Pertaining to agriculture, sustainable describes farming systems that are “capable of maintaining their productivity and usefulness to society indefinitely. Such systems…must be resource-conserving, socially supportive, commercially competitive, and environmentally sound.” By sustainable agriculture we are speaking specifically of an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term: satisfy human food and fiber needs; enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends; make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls; sustain the economic viability of farm operations; and enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole. Further, it is our intent to use methods of cultivation that are designed to maintain or improve agricultural resources. Agriculture has changed dramatically. Food and fiber productivity soared due to new technologies. These changes have had many positive effects and reduce many positive effects and reduced many risks in farming. Prominent among these are topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, and the decline of family farms. California 20 years ago – small farms, heirloom, new cultivation practice,

I think by now you get a pretty good understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish. We can’t do it without you. Our efforts will be rewarded by bringing thousands of notable chefs, restaurateurs, and food directors from worldwide hotels to this community but will ultimately lead to significant employment opportunities for local residents. The entire community regardless of the industry or vocation in which they are presently occupied will benefit from this influx of influential people as well as the considerable tourism this effort will bring. We are the connection to the local farm. |
