sid wainer company history

The company was started in 1914 by his grandfather, Henry Wainer, on the historic cobblestone streets of New Bedford, MA. His grandfather was known for sourcing products from the South Coast of New England and distributing them to the restaurants and stores in his region. Those were the days of horse and buggy.

Henry Wainer grew up working by his father’s (Sid Wainer) side as the third generation of Wainers in the produce industry in New England. Henry’s father was the greatest influence in Henry’s life, both personal and professional. Henry’s code of ethics, his strength of character and his resolve to be a positive influence on all those around him were taught to him by his father.

The company has since experienced consistent growth over the years due to product diversification, and purchasing only the finest 1st pick produce from the world’s finest farms. Henry Wainer has developed close relationships with numerous artisanal producers that create products within the industry using preparations, techniques and recipes that are centuries old. The company, today, sources products from numerous countries around the world, supplying chefs and specialty stores throughout New England and across the United States. Sid Wainer and Son has pioneered air shipments of produce internationally.
