the packer
sws greenhouse opens

With officials from several
government agencies
present, specialty produce
company Sid Wainer & Son
celebrated the grand
opening of its new
greenhouse Dec. 15. Last
month it began planting
tender crops like artichokes,
figs, unusual greens and
herbs and heirloom tomatoes
in it’s inner-city greenhouse
within sight of the company
headquarters in New
Bedford, Mass., says
company president Henry
Wainer, shown with an
artichoke plant. Given New
England’s subfreezing
winter temperatures, it’s
in the experimental phase,
Wainer says. “It’s a definite
commitment to farming.”
The company supplies more
than 18,000 restaurants and
food service companies in
the U.S. “Now were talking
about picking sensitive items
and getting them to the chef
just minutes or hours away
from when they are coming
out of the beds,” he says.
The greenhouse sits on a
7-acre plot.
